Meals of Hope

On July 28, the Association hosted their first "hands-on food-packaging" event for Meals of Hope. Meeting three goals was needed in advance:
  1. to raise $5,000 to pay for the food and supplies needed to pack 20,000 meals
  2. find at least 50 volunteers willing to assemble the meal packets
  3. to find a facility equipped to handle the set-up and equipment needs.

Arrangements were easily scheduled at The Sanibel Community House with the event to occur before schools were back in session so that families and children also could participate. It was a bonus to find that Community House staff also wanted to help with the packing.

By the afternoon of the event with packing scheduled to occur between 3 to 5 p.m., a total of $6,675 was raised and 90+ volunteers arrived at The Community House ready to help. Packers included Realtors®, Assoc Affiliate Members and business partners, their families, friends, and neighbors, including Assoc and Community House staff members, and F.I.S.H. volunteers.

Several committee members arrived early to be trained in the fast-paced assembly-line process where 10 to 12 volunteers per line, were quickly assigned to a position to assemble the food packets. Tasks included scooping, measuring, weighing, packing, sealing, labeling, boxing, and replenishing.

Surpassing the goal of 20,000 meals, 28,800 meals were packaged in record time – in less than the expected two hours. It was a wonderful exercise in team building with a purpose!

The Association sends its sincere thanks to all donors, participants, the Community House, and Meals of Hope for making it an afternoon to remember.
