"Call to Action" from City of Sanibel

06/11/2018

As a result of the recent rains, the water quality in and around the island of Sanibel has degraded. The City of Sanibel and it’s residents have had enough. In an email to our President Dustyn Corace, Mayor Ruane and the City Council have asked the Sanibel & Captiva Islands Association of REALTORS® to join the fight in a “Call to Action” to voice our dissent with the current actions of the Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District. Their decisions to release massive discharges using the Caloosahatchee River are damaging our island property values, local economy, employment, and our very way of life. In the photo above, you can see the very impact the water releases have had at Lighthouse Beach.

“This matter is the highest & most important priority for Sanibel Mayor Kevin Ruane & our Sanibel City Council. Please find attached the Mayor’s letter to the Water Management District calling for immediate relief from the damaging high-volume Lake O releases. Additionally attached are a set of talking points for those who are willing to add their voices to this cause. We are looking to the Sanibel & Captiva islands Association of Realtors to be a major ally in this mission. It would be of great assistance & appreciated if you could ask your members to contact the listed entities with the power to impact the current releases.” -Sanibel City Council
